Steelhead in Virginia? Kinda? VDGIF has been putting in “steelhead” strain rainbow trout in Lake Moomaw in the hopes that they would run up the upper Jackson giving Va a spring run of fish. The fly fishing homies out west don’t consider Steelhead true unless they touch salt, they scoff at our Great Lakes “Steelhead” calling them rainheads or just glorified lake run rainbows. If they knew what was going down in the home of Chris Brown, they’d probably Chris Brown me for writing this post. While the fish aren’t true steelhead they are lake run, and while they are lake run, they aren’t big. I got my first taste of Va “chrome” two days ago, all seven inches of it. Hundreds of fish have run up the river but no giants, all are in the 7 – 12 inch range. If you’re around the area you should check it out, its kind of like paying 20 bucks to see Va’s natural bridge. It’s kinda tight but you do it just to say you did it unh (Kanye Voice)… Sadly I dropped the seven inch leviathan into the river before I could snag a pic but here are some other trout from arguably some of the most scenic water in the Old Dominion. Smoke em if you got em

My relationship with brooktrout fishing started when I was 14 years old. I caught my first brook trout (and first member of the trout family) on a size 14 Mr. Rapidan parachute in Shenandoah National Park. At 22 the puppy love is a little jaded. Brook trout aren’t hard to catch by an means, they’re small, and most of the day you’re rock climbing and hiking to them rather than fishing for them. As one friend so poetically put it, “fishing for brooktrout is like wacking it when you can get the real thing.” A true master of the English language. I must admit in my later years I have turned my nose up and back the brookies to chase “smarter” and bigger trout. But I always come back to brookies, like that girl you can never get over or in my case cigarettes. Heres some pictures from two days in SNP chasing the “little salmon of the fountains.”

Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes FlyCurious is coming back full effect. Since I’ve been gone I got accepted into the School of Media Arts and Design at James Madison University and will be studying Digital Video Cinema. That means I should have a bunch of video content up in hurr in the coming year. I thank everyone for reading this blog and I apologize for a lack in up keep I’d like to further explain the hiatus but I’d rather not explain it online as I would like to have a job someday. In more exciting news I caught my first carp on a San Juan worm last week! unhh

I now attend JMU here in the Shemnandoah Valley but I spent my freshman year at the University of Montana. I’ve always regretted leaving.
a BACKYARD in NOWHERE official HD trailer from Sellfish Media & Smatis Film on Vimeo.

After much hype, I finally was able to get my hands on A Backyard in Nowhere. The story takes place in the Alaskan backcountry and follows four European transplants and their insatiatble thirst for Esox Lucius( Northern Pike). The video chronicles the search for alligator sized pike and all the obsticles the group must go through in order to reach these sacred creatures. The anglers end up befriending some native alaskans and end up getting into fights over water with a local fly fishing lodge claiming the water is “theirs”.

Over all I thought it was a solid film but I don’t know if it could justify the $42 price tag it carries in some shops. It tends to fit the cliche of a fly fishing stoners repeditivley talking about how “magical” a location is. What makes this film different is that it actually shows them smoking and drinking, coupled with male nudity, giving this film an R rating. The guy with the “western” accent narrating the film began to sound like nails on a chalkboard 3 mins into the movie, I want to see a fishing movie not a “western”. Although I guess buyer beware because it is advertised as a “fly fishing western”. Trout snobs bewhere its all pike minus a 3 second clip of a salmon in the first minute of the movie.

I thought the filming and camera angles were unparalled in the fly fishing film genre and the solid story really made the film. I did like that it also showed the human side of fly fishing rather than staright pike porn.

4/5

There are only 2 things I will drive miles for and BOTH of them smell like fish.

After a week long concerta and cigarette binge I was done with finals and ready for some fishing. I was out of my last final by 9am Friday, slept off the in between and was on the road for New York by 3pm. I had no idea what I was driving into. After having multiple people back out because of “going to the Nutcracker with my mom” and my room mate getting into a car accident, totaling the car we were supposed to take, it was looking like it was just going to be me and my buddy Mike.

Mike booked his plane tickets to buffalo a month in advance, and we had no clue where we were staying until 2 days before. It was Thursday when I got a call in the library from my buddy John. He said, “Ritchie, told me you were going up, I’ll be back from Bragg by then”. Perfect now it looked like the trip was staring to take shape. Later that day another buddy called me about of the blue and said he could make the six hour drive from Connecticut and meet me. This was great we now had 4. As I was about to leave Friday I got a call from John who stated that we would be on leave from Bragg until later and to go on without him. I was bummed but I didn’t mind driving alone. After 8 hours from Va to Buffalo I scoped up my buddy from the airport and we made it to our spot. Our friends from Connecticut met up with us Saturday night. Then out of the blue my phone goes off and I see its a text from John, ” I’ll be at the train station at 930″. Turns out Darth took a 20hr train ride from Bragg to get up to NY to steelhead.

After plugging a flat tire the adventure didn’t stop. On the ride home Darth and I had to do some last minute modifications to my car after hearing a grinding noise from the underside. You may also note the classy duck tape trunk closing job.

We fished for four days and had a great time made some new friends and even caught a couple fish along the way. I couldn’t have asked for more . . . except maybe hookers and blow. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas
